STATEMENT BY THE CIVIL SOCIETY UNMUTED COALITION SOUTH AFRICA (CSUCSA) ON THE BRUTAL KILLING OF MASEGO MOSHWEU
The Civil Society Unmuted Coalition South Africa (CSUCSA) expresses its profound shock, sadness, and outrage at the brutal killing of Ms. Masego Moshweu, who was allegedly murdered by her husband in Mahikeng after 18 years of marriage.
We extend our deepest condolences to her children, family, friends, and the wider community during this painful time. No family should ever have to endure such a devastating loss, and no child should be left to grapple with the trauma and lifelong consequences of gender-based violence.
This tragic incident serves as another painful reminder that Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains one of the greatest threats to the safety, dignity, and human rights of women and children in South Africa.
CSUCSA strongly condemns all forms of violence against women and calls for a thorough investigation and the full might of the law to be applied to ensure justice for Masego and accountability for those responsible.
GBVF Awareness Must Be a Daily Conversation
CSUCSA believes that GBVF awareness should never be reduced to an event, a campaign, or a commemorative month. It must become part of our daily conversations and collective responsibility.
Discussions on preventing violence, promoting healthy relationships, respecting human dignity, and protecting women and children should take place:
- In our homes and families;
- In churches and other places of worship;
- In schools;
- In universities and TVET colleges;
- In traditional Kgotlas and community meetings;
- In stokvels;
- In workplaces and government offices;
- In men's gatherings and mentorship spaces;
- In social clubs; and
- In every platform where communities engage and influence one another.
Ending GBVF requires the active participation of every sector of society. Silence, denial, and indifference only create conditions in which violence continues to thrive.
CSUCSA therefore calls upon government, civil society organisations, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, educational institutions, the private sector, and communities to strengthen prevention efforts, encourage early intervention, and build a culture that rejects violence in all its forms.
Justice for Masego must be accompanied by a renewed national commitment to ensuring that no other woman loses her life to preventable violence.
