CSUCSA Joins the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the 1976 Youth Uprising: Honouring the Legacy and Advancing the Struggle

The Civil Society Unmuted Coalition South Africa (CSUCSA) proudly joins millions of South Africans in commemorating Youth Day 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of the historic 1976 Youth Uprising under the theme:

"Finishing What Was Started."

Today, we pay tribute to the courageous young people of 16 June 1976 whose unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity changed the course of South African history. Their bravery remains a beacon of hope and a reminder that young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but the drivers of change today.

As civil society, we recognise that the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 impose upon us a collective responsibility to continue advancing the ideals of freedom, democracy, quality education, economic inclusion, social justice, and active citizenship.

National and Provincial Youth Leadership Participation

In honour of this historic milestone, the Civil Society Unmuted Coalition South Africa will actively participate in the 1976 Youth Uprising Commemoration March through its national and provincial youth leadership structures.

The delegation will be led by:

  • National Youth Lead;
  • National Deputy Youth Lead;
  • National Youth Secretary;
  • Various Provincial Youth Leads and Youth Leadership Structures from across South Africa.

This broad representation demonstrates CSUCSA's unwavering commitment to strengthening youth participation, fostering national unity, and ensuring that the aspirations of the youth of 1976 continue to inspire action across all provinces.

The participation of our leadership reflects our belief that the work started by previous generations remains unfinished and requires the active involvement of today's youth to address the pressing challenges facing our nation.

A Renewed Commitment to the Youth Agenda

Fifty years after the 1976 Youth Uprising, many young South Africans continue to face significant challenges, including:

  • High levels of youth unemployment;
  • Poverty and inequality;
  • Limited access to quality education and economic opportunities;
  • Gender-based violence and social exclusion;
  • Mental health and social welfare challenges;
  • Low levels of civic and democratic participation.

CSUCSA believes that Youth Day should serve as more than a day of remembrance. It should be a national call to action for government, civil society, the private sector, and communities to work collaboratively in creating sustainable opportunities for young people.

A Message from the Youth Leadership

CSUCSA Youth Leadership reaffirms that:
"The youth of 1976 marched for dignity, equality, justice, and a better future. Fifty years later, we have a duty to preserve their legacy by strengthening democracy, promoting active citizenship, empowering communities, and creating opportunities for every young South African to thrive. Their struggle was not only for their generation—it was an investment in our future. As civil society, we remain committed to finishing what was started."

Youth Day 2026: A Call for Unity and Action

The Civil Society Unmuted Coalition South Africa calls upon all young people, community leaders, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations, educational institutions, and all South Africans to recommit themselves to the values that inspired the youth of 1976:

  • Unity;
  • Courage;
  • Accountability;
  • Social justice;
  • Constitutional democracy;
  • Active citizenship;
  • Community development and nation-building.

As we commemorate fifty years since the historic uprising, we honour the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom and recommit ourselves to building a South Africa where every young person can realise their full potential.

"The struggle for freedom did not end in 1976. It lives on in every effort to build an inclusive, just, and prosperous South Africa. As we march today, we honour the past, embrace the present, and shape the future by finishing what was started."
