Freedom Day Message from the National Chairperson,
Cynthia Chishimba | CSUCSA
Leaders and Members of Civil Society
As we mark Freedom Day, we honour the sacrifices that brought us democracy. But we must be honest—freedom without accountability, justice, and ethical leadership is incomplete.
“Freedom is not just the absence of oppression, but the presence of justice.” — Bishop Desmond Tutu
Today, we speak boldly.
Corruption continues to undermine our democracy. We are witnessing the capture and weakening of critical institutions, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and municipalities—institutions that are meant to protect our people and deliver essential services.
Instead of serving communities, some within these systems have betrayed public trust.
At the same time, we are confronted with the display of extravagant and luxurious lifestyles by some politicians and public servants, while millions of South Africans live in deep poverty, unemployment, and inequality. This contradiction is unacceptable. Public office must never be used for self-enrichment at the expense of the people.
We are also deeply concerned about the state of our youth. The generation of June 16, 1976, stood with courage and purpose in the fight for freedom. Today, many young people are exposed to drugs and social ills that are destroying their future and eroding the legacy they are meant to carry forward. We cannot afford to lose this generation.
As civil society, we refuse to be silent.
CSUCSA remains committed to civic education and community empowerment—ensuring that citizens understand their rights, demand accountability, and actively participate in governance.
Through our district-based model, we are strengthening communities to hold leaders accountable and to rebuild ethical, responsive governance from the ground up. Freedom Day must be a call to action.
“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.” — Bishop Desmond Tutu
Let us speak out against corruption. Let us defend the integrity of our institutions. Let us protect the future of our youth.
Happy Freedom Day!
