Today marks a defining moment in the history of our nation—a day when brave young South Africans stood against injustice and oppression, demonstrating extraordinary courage in the pursuit of freedom, dignity, and quality education. Their sacrifices laid the foundation for the democratic South Africa we continue to build today.

CSUCSA Joins the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the 1976 Youth Uprising: Honouring the Legacy and Advancing the Struggle

The Civil Society Unmuted Coalition South Africa (CSUCSA) proudly joins millions of South Africans in commemorating Youth Day 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of the historic 1976 Youth Uprising under the theme:

"Finishing What Was Started."

Today, we pay tribute to the courageous young people of 16 June 1976 whose unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity changed the course of South African history. Their bravery remains a beacon of hope and a reminder that young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but the drivers of change today.

As civil society, we recognise that the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 impose upon us a collective responsibility to continue advancing the ideals of freedom, democracy, quality education, economic inclusion, social justice, and active citizenship.
